How do refugees survive harsh winters in makeshift camps? With 5 million Syrian refugees facing freezing temperatures and severe illnesses, taking bold action was crucial.
We launched "Tweet for Heat," a collaboration between Alwaleed Philanthropies and UNHCR, to highlight the suffering of refugees in winter. After assessing camps, we created heat-monitoring devices installed in tents across Lebanon, Iraq, Greece, and Croatia. These devices tweet messages from refugees, including the temperature, three times a day, using the hashtag #TweetforHeat. Users can view these messages and the impact of donations on the website www.tweetforheat.com.
The project was adopted by UNHCR, leading to further installations in more camps. It gained attention from media and raised a total of $650,000 in donations.
